How To Handle Relationships When You Are Depressed.

Do not hesitate to love and to love deeply. You might be afraid of the pain that deep love can cause. When those you love deeply reject you, leave you, or die, your heart will be broken. But that should not hold you back from loving deeply. The pain that comes from deep love makes your love ever more fruitful.

  Henri Nouwen’s meditation, “Love Deeply”:

 My paraphrase of I Corinthians thirteen is, “Say whatever you want but if you don’t love people ( an action, not a feeling) you’re just blowing smoke”.

But it’s easier said than done when we are depressed.

Depression is complicated and even more difficult if we’re having relationship difficulties. Many times it’s relationship issues that cause us the most pain. Even though God knew that we would encounter difficult relationships while on this earth, His design was not that we live on a desert island.  

Surely an all-knowing God knew when He created Adam and Eve what was going to happen and it was apparently still worth it to Him because it meant that those who loved Him in return would do so out of choice, not compulsion. We are destined by virtue of that same free will to spend our lives figuring out how to get along with each other.  

Depression definitely affects our relationships. We need to be aware of that and not take any drastic action while we’re feeling so down. It’s not the time to terminate a relationship unless you are unsafe.

We get offended easily.

We get our feelings hurt easily.

We get mad easily.

While relationship issues do have to be addressed, that’s for when your thinking isn’t muddled by the dark cloud of depression.

What you can do is avoid any unnecessary drama.

We need to let our family and friends love us and help us and not judge them for their efforts. They will perhaps says things that are insensitive. But remember depression is hard to understand if you’ve never experienced it. Most people really do mean well.
